For years, social media platforms feed us content through algorithmic timelines that prioritize engagement over truth. These systems aren't neutral. They're designed to keep you enraged and consume ads.
What happened?
Social media platforms learned, that you can extend time spent on app by their user by making them angry. So they designed the algorithms, that are responsibly for what you get presented in your feeds, to boost "controversy" (disinformation and ragebait). And most people aren´t even aware that they are labrats.
Social media companys claim their algorithms are black boxes.
- "We can't control what the algorithm shows to our users"
- "It's just giving people what they want"
- "We're not responsible for the content"
This is a lie.
"The largest scale psychological experiment in human history is being run on billions of people without their informed consent."
The Real Cost
The algorithmic manipulation of our information diet has led to:
- Increased polarization - Echo chambers reinforce extreme views
- Spread of misinformation - Controversy gets more engagement
- Democratic erosion - Fake news spreads faster than truth
There is so much wrong with social media but just take a look what Reuters reported:
"Meta earns about $7 billion in annualized revenue from this category of scam ads each year, another late 2024 document states."
These corporations are knowingly displaying scam ads to their users and regulatory fines are just cost of doing business.
